- W1565164110 abstract "The role of acetylcholine (ACh) in the cortex is predominantly as a modulator rather than a fast synaptic transmitter, such as glutamate. This is true of the relatively slow, G-protein mediated muscarinic actions, whether postsynaptic (on K and Ca channels, via M1 receptors) or presynaptic, regulating its own release or that of other transmitters, via M2 receptors. The general enhancement of activity produced by suppression of K conductances (as well as non-specific cationic inward currents and some striking disinhibitory actions) is probably a major element of an ascending arousal mechanism that facilitates thalamocortical interactions and is thus somehow involved in the sleep–waking cycle. By enhancing and prolonging cortical responses to sensory inputs ACh may play a significant role in cortical arousal. In addition to the facilitation of neuronal firing, ACh promotes oscillations in cortical networks. Because it suppresses various GK's and reduces synaptic inhibition, ACh facilitates the induction of long term potentiation and synaptic plasticity more generally. Thus, the cholinergic input to cortex is likely to be beneficial for learning and memory, and, during development, for the growth and organization of synaptic connections." @default.
