- W156520165 abstract "The final steps of immune response against the peripheral nerve myelin, the target tissue in EAN, are incompletely known. To find out whether the target tissue is intact or worked up before the arrival of sensitized lympocytes into the venules of the nerve roots the activities of acid proteinase and acid phosphatase were determined in pieces taken from different sites of nerves supplying the muscles of forelimbs and hindlegs of rabbits. The samples were taken daily from the day before the manifestation of clinical signs of the disease to the third day after the day when the experimental animals seemed to become ill and every second day thereafter. The total observation period was 15 days. For the neurochemical data light microscopical references were used. There was a clear-cut increase in the activity of acid proteinase in the nerve roots during the first three days of observation. The morphological findings, the increase of macrophages and demyelination, were in good correlation with the increase of acid proteinase in the same area but also with the progress of the clinical signs. The increase of acid phosphatase activity was less marked and did not follow the proximodistal distribution observed in the morphological changes and in the acid proteinase activity. The results of the study give us data for the timetable of the different events during the acute stage of EAN but our original question still remains without answer." @default.
