- W156525245 abstract "Summary By combining immunologic investigations using various techniques with cytomorphologic and enzyme cytochemical analyses, substantial advances have been made in the classification of T-cell lymphomas. Morphologically, four groups of T-cell lymphomas are distinguishable: (1) lymphoblastic lymphoma, (2) lymphocytic lymphoma, (3) immunoblastic lymphoma, and (4) mixed blastic/cytic lymphoma. On the basis of immunologic features, a vast majority of the T-lymphoblastic lymphomas were found to be derived from thymocytes and their precursors (“thymocytic type”) and a small number of the lymphomas to be derived from peripheral T cells (“peripheral T-cell type”). Corresponding to the three different maturation forms of thymopoiesis, the thymocytic type of lymphoblastic lymphoma is subdivided into (a) the prethymocytic subtype, (b) the prothymocytic, subtype, and (c) the mature thymocytic subtype. The prothymocytic subtype is by far the most common variant of T-lymphoblastic lymphoma. Lymphoblastic lymphomas of the peripheral T-cell type have to be classified into those derived from suppressor T cells and those derived from helper T cells. The group of T-lymphocytic lymphomas includes (a) chronic lymphocytic leukemia of the T type (T-CLL), (b) prolymphocytic leukemia of the T type, (c) Sezary’s syndrome and mycosis fungoides, and (d) T-zone lymphoma. All these types of lymphoma show immunologic and enzyme cytochemical characteristics of peripheral T cells. The studies done so far on T-CLL cells suggest that they are derived from helper T cells in some cases and from suppressor T cells in other cases. The cells of Sezary’s syndrome, and probably of mycosis fungoides as well, are apparently the neoplastic counterparts of special forms of helper T cells. A notable finding is the dermotropism of the T-cell neoplasms that are related to the helper T-cell fraction. T-immunoblastic lymphoma is very rare. The one case we have observed appeared to be related to the helper T-cell lineage. Finally, a new type of T-cell lymphoma is presented. It is morphologically characterized by a mixed proliferation of very large “blastic” cells and small “cytic” cells. Enzyme cytochemical staining confirmed the assumption that the cells of different sizes belong to the same cell clone." @default.
