- W1565720686 abstract "WHEN FACULTY at Methodist College of Nursing heard about the certified nurse educator exam developed by the NLN, we were interested but apprehensive about taking the exam. Six of us decided to commit time and effort to prepare as a group. Our teaching experience ranged from four to 43 years; collectively we represented 106 years of teaching. At our first meeting, we reviewed the CNE candidate handbook available online on the NLN website (www.nln.org/ facultycertification/handbook/index .htm). Based on our primary objective, to pass the CNE exam, we decided to meet for two hours on the last Friday of each month. We created a basic agenda for each meeting and asked the college librarian to purchase all recommended reference books listed in the CNE handbook. More than 30 books are recommended. We placed our collection of books, which covered the six major subject areas comprising the exam, and other study materials in a small, wheeled cart that we kept in one of our offices between meetings. We kept the cart locked and posted a sign-out sheet, creating a great place to store study materials with access as needed. We followed a similar agenda at each meeting. During the first hour, two members of the group would present reports on one of our book cart holdings, summarizing the highlights and major contributions of the reading material. This was done informally, without podium or PowerPoint, but handouts were often created and distributed. The presentations were followed by group discussion concerning the topic and its application to practice. At each meeting, we sequentially addressed one of the six major subject areas identified in the CNE handbook (see Table), selecting the appropriate reading material listed under Recommended Readings. By summarizing books in this manner, each member of the group was given a synopsis of the subject matter along with topics for review and study. In time, all of the recommended books were presented and discussed. At the close of the meeting, we selected readings for the next month and volunteered, on a rotating basis, to give group reports and lead the discussion. The second half of the meeting was devoted to possible exam questions. While the CNE Self-Assessment Examination (SAE) is available for a nominal fee through the NLN and is accessible online for a 60-day period following payment, not all of our members chose to purchase it. (See www.nln.org/ FacuhyCertification/information/sae.htm.) Therefore, we constructed questions that might be posed based on the CNE exam blueprint found in the handbook. The process of reaching a consensus for these group-posed questions was sometimes drawn out. But it was truly great fun, fostering lively discussion and friendly debate. Like students taking exams, we discovered that discrepancies sometimes exist between theory and practice, and that past experience could either help or hinder one's success. Following the session, the informal leader of the group sent an email to all group members, providing an overview of the group gathering and identifying the topic and reports that were planned for the next meeting. Along with the six individuals who formed the committed core of the study group, other faculty members were always invited. When we concluded our Friday sessions in the early spring, we were reluctant to see our meetings come to an end. The meetings provided a venue for relaxation and learning. For two hours each month, we were able to leave behind the day-to-day responsibilities of the classroom and set aside time to discuss teaching, scholarship, and practice. One member of our core group said that she felt energized by the experience, that it was a highlight of her week. Because we had worked together as colleagues, we felt comfortable expressing ideas, asking questions, and confronting disagreements.
