- W1566005484 abstract "A more critical analysis of the economic feasibility of solar energy is called for than the government's incentive program to reduce oil and gas consumption. The interface between solar space conditioning and waterheating and the electric utilities is examined to identify the potential tradeoffs; to define the interface between building design and utility economics; and to determine the true benefits of alternative energy applications by a systems analysis of the utility supply and demand network. A simulation model of Colorado Springs, Colorado which assumes the building load as the central focus of the system finds a variation in the effect of solar investments on peak demand and concludes that active solar systems are not economically justified at the present time. The centralized nature of electric utilities will require some changes in infrastructure to accommodate the tax and price incentives of a solar component. Load-management incentives can provide a stimulus, but adequate analytical tools must be used to optimize cost-effectiveness snd to help building owners make appropriate choices. 282 references, 3 figures, 44 tables.
