- W1566151172 abstract "The colors black and white have long carried opposite connotations. Black has connoted evil and disgrace, while white has connoted decency and purity (Gergen, 1967; Isaacs, 1963; Jordan, 1968; Podair, 1970). Where, as in the United States, colors have also designated racial groups, their connotations may well reinforce social norms pertaining to those groups. For example, norms describing Blacks as vile and immoral may be reinforced by the connotations of the color black. This article reports a recent survey of color connotations among Blacks and Whites, and raises issues which are crucial to the interpretation of color connotations research. Williams has been the principal investigator of the connotations of colors by which racial groups are designated." @default.
