- W1566158576 abstract "Cinemas in both the Global North and the Global South have explored a wide spectrum of alternative aesthetics featuring other historical rhythms, other narrative structures, and other views of the body, spirituality, and the collective life. This chapter discusses how subversive aesthetics can go beyond both conventional realism and political modernism. After questioning the orthodox chronotope within mainstream media fictions, it highlights a wide array of alternative cinematic forms. The chapter talks about Hollywood Aristotelianism, the Menippean schema, Baroque modernism and the marvelous American real. Cinema can construct fractured chronotopes that explode the diegetic continuum of the orthodox chronotope by mingling contradictory spatiotemporalities. As a corollary of the fractured chronotope, an aesthetic of anachronism is common both to the avant-garde and to certain “low” forms of popular culture such as sketch comedy and standup. The fractured chronotope has affinities with what might be called “metaphysical cine-poetry.”." @default.
