- W1566179920 abstract "“Medically unexplained” symptoms (MUS), also known as somatic symptom and related disorders in DSM-5, is a term used to describe physical symptoms that cannot be fully explained by a known disease process. MUS are found across all specialties, can cause similar levels of disability to symptoms caused by disease, and may utilize high levels of healthcare resource due to frequent attendance and repeated investigation. These conditions include conversion disorder, illness anxiety disorder (hypochondriasis), somatic symptom disorder, and factitious disorder. While the term MUS recognizes the uncertainty around causation, it is less helpful clinically. The cornerstone of management is to assist the patient in finding an explanation that is helpful, enabling collaborative management of symptoms and ultimately allowing for a reduction in utilization of healthcare. We also describe cacosmia, a person's delusional belief that an unpleasant odour can be smelt, versus olfactory reference syndrome, where the person believes he/she emits the unpleasant odour. This can develop for a variety of medical, psychiatric, or psychological causes, but for some a cause may never be identified. We describe an approach to management for clinicians encountering patients with this distressing symptom." @default.
