- W1566198269 abstract "A new approach to teaching has emerged in the field of Public Administration. Instead of the emphasis on the regurgitation of a large volume of theory from teacher to student, the alternative method emphasises participation, involvement and problem-solving by the students in the classroom environment. This method of instruction is referred to as the case study method of teaching. Students do not always grasp the day-to-day functions of a public sector employee, as it is not always easy for them to understand what the machinery of government entails, especially when they are not in the work environment. The teacher can use the case study method which provides a description of an actual situation experienced by the protagonist, and the student has to use the theory learnt to answer questions on how he would have solved the problem. The student learns to think independently, and develops independent ideas out of actual experiences. A study was conducted at the University of South Africa (Unisa) with Public Administration students, where students were asked by means of a questionnaire about their experiences with a case study assignment versus their experiences with a theory-based assignment. These empirical findings from the research conducted will be discussed throughout the article." @default.
