- W1566218237 abstract "On December 18, 1950, when President Truman approved atomic weapons testing in Nevada, he cautioned his advisors to announce the policy in such a way as not to scare the American people about “shooting off bombs in their backyard.” From that point on, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) assiduously pursued a massive public relations campaign designed to win and maintain popular support for the arms race. Using government documents and archival material as the primary sources, this article looks at the four-pronged approach followed by the AEC. The Commission first inundated the public with positive information on atomic power, a subject few people understood at the time, and then emphasized the national defense needs for testing to protect the democratic way of life, highlighted the potential nonmilitary benefits of testing, and constantly reassured the citizenry that testing was not hazardous to their health and safety." @default.
