Nerve growth factors (NTFs) can act on these neurons with great potency in a dose dependent manner. This chapter investigates the effects of partial, unilateral experimental infarctions of the rodent cerebral cortex on the cholinergic phenotype of the NBM and the consequences of trophic factor therapy in preventing or reverting the retrograde and anterograde degeneration suffered by these neurons after the application of cortical lesions. Their administration alters biochemical markers of cholinergic function in cell body rich areas and induces the expression of the mRNAs for low and high affinity nerve growth factor (NGF) receptors. Delayed treatment with NGF rescues the affected cholinergic phenotype. These changes are extensive to synaptic cholinergic remodelling at the cerebral cortex level, expressed as hypertrophy of presynaptic sites and a higher number of cholinergic synaptic elements. The synaptic remodelling of the cerebral cortex induced by growth factors could explain the improved behavioral performance observed in NGF-treated rats bearing cortical infarcts." @default.
