A region of highly uniform magnetic field provides an ideal volume in which a charged particle may revolve in an orbit perpendicular to the field, B o , at a measurable cyclotron frequency v c = ω c /2π. However, for ultra-high-precision measurements, B o cannot be directly measured and, thus, must be calibrated relative to some other charged particle, preferably a carbon ion, as the resulting ratio would directly yield atomic masses when suitably corrected for lost electrons and binding energies. The assumption that is implicit in any mass ratio comparison is that n is an integer and the quantum of charge is identical for all electrons, free or bound within atoms. The chapter describes the spectrometer that is characterized by its ideal environment that is made free of unwanted collisions with background gas by immersing the entire apparatus into a liquid helium bath. It is also free of Coulomb interactions from like charges, because the sample is generally trapped as a single ion. The effects of the electric trapping fields are well understood and can be removed from the measurement of the cyclotron frequency. In fact, it is even possible to reshape both the electric and the magnetic fields to, further, reduce systematic errors associated with the finite energies that exist in each normal mode. All of these things help the Penning trap mass spectrometer (PTMS) that have extremely high accuracy; eventually, this accuracy will exceed 1 part in 10 10 ." @default.
