- W1566809516 abstract "After reviewing the main theories of concrete creep, the author proposes a new explanation which takes account of only part of the problem, concerning a chemical cause. The solubility of unhydrated cement components increases with applied pressure which signifies that the quantity of hydrated cement is larger in concrete subjected to creep. The hydration of cement components results in a reduction in volume and consequently an increase in compression deformation as a function of hydration under pressure. As the Poisson ratio during creep does not reach 0, 5, a reduction in volume of concrete subjected to creep occurred. Hydration of cement being irreversible, the deformation produced by it is also irreversible, which explains the irreversible part of creep. The main experimental facts which demonstrate this phenomenon are: (1) concrete subjected to creep has a compressive strength greater than concrete not subjected to creep; (2) concrete subjected to creep has a smaller shrinkage than concrete not subjected to creep.
