- W1567092008 abstract "Publisher Summary Many anecdotal reports and case studies indicate that self-injurious behavior contributes to parental stress, and that it can be very disruptive to families. This chapter describes the behavior, classification, and epidemiology of self injurious behavior in intellectual populations and people with intellectual disabilities, and effects on parents and care takers. The chapter also addresses the different types of classifications, such as structural, functional, combined functional, and topographical classification, psychiatric diagnostic systems of self injurious behavior in intellectual populations, and people with intellectual disabilities. Prevalence of self-injurious behavior in the non-intellectually disabled population is one-and-a-half to three times higher among women than in men, while self-biting was reported as the most prevalent form of self-injurious behavior. The chapter suggests that self-injurious behavior is not only a problem due to its immediate deleterious effect on the physical health and well-being of the person who exhibits it. However, studies made on the social side effects of severe self injurious behavior are less, those, that have been published clearly and unanimously reveal very negative emotional effects on others, whether at home or in specialized care facilities. Caring for someone with incessant self-injurious behavior can be highly stressful as well as demoralizing for direct care workers and families alike." @default.
