In such species, where populations go through frequent extinction and recolonisation, seed migration is expected to be an important component of gene flow dynamics. To investigate the importance of seed dispersal in the wild service tree, we examined the spatial distribution of maternally inherited chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) markers among populations separated by tens, hundreds or thousands of kilometres.The survey of cpDNA PCR-RFLP in 1031 individuals distributed among 57 populations allowed the detection of 29 haplotypes. Levels of differentiation as measured by G ST at the different scales are among the lowest observed for cpDNA in forest trees so far. No phylogeographic structure appears across the investigated range. Only a weak pattern of isolation by distance was detected, for distances up to 50 km. These characteristics strongly differ from that of the majority of tree species studied so far. We show that seed-mediated gene flow strongly affects patterns of genetic structure, and also that post-glacial history of S. torminalis is much less reflected in the present genetic structure than what has been described for other widespread species.Key wordscpDNAphylogeographyseedgene flow Sorbus torminalis L." @default.
