- W1567170286 abstract "Recent carbonate sediments in shallow seas are composed for the most part of particles of aragonite and Mg-calcite, with a waterfilled pore system that occupies 40-75% of the sediment volume. Yet the most stable ancient carbonate lrocks are constructed of variable proportions of calcite and dolomite with porosities commonly as low as 2-3%. In the history of diagenetic change between these two extremes we can trace the evolution of the carbonate rocks that make up so many of the most profitable oil and gas reservoirs. It is convenient to do this by considering in turn the four diasenetic environments of Choquette and Pray (1970); the submarine eogenetic. the meteoric eogenetic. the deep crustal mesogenetic and, finally, the situation where the rock, after lithificazion. is exposed once more to processes acting at the surface of the earth, in the telogenetic environment. A marine carbonate sediment still bathed in sea water (eopnetic) is a mixture of solid phases of which arasonite and MFcalcite are metastable and calcite and dolomite are theoretically stable. Most Mgcalcites are more soluble than aeragonite which is more soluble than calcite in water containing dissolved CG in equilibrium with the atmosphere and at pressures and temperatures normal at the earth's surface. The transformation of the Mg-calcite" @default.
