In this model, the members of anorganisation are classified into distinct classes. As timepasses, they move from one class to another, or to the outside world, in a random way governed by fixed transitionprobabilities. The emphasis is, then, placed on examiningmeans of reaching and then retaining the structure bestadapted to the aims of the organisation, with the assumptionthat only the recruitment flows are subject to control.Attainability and maintainability have received agreat deal of attention in recent years. However, much ofthe work has been concerned with deterministic analysis, inthe sense that average values are used in place of randomvariables. We adopt, instead, a stochastic approach to thestudy of these forms of control.We present some of the problems encountered whenevaluating probabilities related to the distribution ofstock numbers at different steps and we give a detailednumerical comparison of different recruitment strategies.An iterative method is developed to compute exactvalues of the probabilities of attaining and maintaining astructure in one step. It is designed for the special butvery important case of systems in which promotion is onlypossible to the next highest grade. Its efficiency makespossible the use of exact results in the comparison of therecruitment strategies, which was formerly accomplished bymeans of simulation techniques only.As to the comparison itself, it emerges that thestrategy which, at each step, steers the system as far aspossible towards the goal is superior to all deterministicstrategies. Also, this strategy is shown to come close toproviding the highest level of control that is possible." @default.
