- W1567230387 abstract "Despite increasing recognition in economically developed countries of the importance of addressing health inequalities, there has been a nearly universal failure to consider equality issues in both academic reviews of approaches to suicide prevention and the formulation of national suicide prevention strategies. This has occurred despite ample evidence of systematic inequalities in the risk of suicidal behaviour associated with different indicators of social position, including labour market status, occupational social class, education, income, housing tenure and labour market position, at the individual level, and socioeconomic deprivation, at the aggregate level. This chapter reviews the relevant worldwide literature and describes an investigation of deaths due to intentional self-harm and undetermined causes in Scotland over the period 1989-2002. The weight of evidence summarised in the review points to the existence of socioeconomic inequalities in suicidal behaviour across a range of indicators at both individual and area levels. The findings of the empirical study confirm that low social class and socioeconomic deprivation are associated with increased suicide risk; and suggest that the influence of individual social class is far stronger than the influence of area-level socioeconomic affluence/deprivation in accounting for suicide-related inequality. An exceptionally high relative risk of suicide was found among those in the lowest social class living in the most deprived areas (approximately 10 times higher than the risk of suicide among those in the highest social class in the most affluent areas). The cumulative research evidence highlights the importance of applying an equity lens to national suicide prevention strategies and action plans. Many policy challenges require resolution, however, including the strategic approach to inequality reduction, whether people or places are to be targeted, and the identification of interventions that are likely to be effective in reducing socioeconomic inequalities in suicide risk." @default.
