- W1567272350 abstract "Secret Yankees: The Union Circle in Confederate Atlanta. By Thomas G. Dyer. (Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999. Pp. xiii, 383. Preface and acknowledgments, introduction, maps, illustrations, appendices, notes, index. $29.95.) Intrigued by the diary of an anonymous female Unionist from Atlanta that had been acquired by the University of Georgia, Thomas G. Dyer set about to identify the author and then develop her story and that of approximately one hundred Unionist families who were in Atlanta during the Civil War. In so doing, he has added a compelling and well-researched volume to the growing bookshelf about southern Unionists. In 1854, Vermonters Cyrena and Amherst Stone moved to Atlanta and became prosperous. There they stayed even through secession and war's beginning, despite their firm attachment to the Union. The Stones became the center of Atlanta Unionists-transplanted northerners, foreigners, blacks both slave and free, and a few native white southerners, all of whom shared an opposition to secession. During Georgia's secession crisis, they campaigned against it, yet when secession came they remained in Atlanta with their property and assumed a much lower profile. Secret details the conflict between their loyalty and mandatory measures to aid the Confederate war effort, and their efforts to avoid imprisonment and conscription. Suspected or identified as, at best, lukewarm supporters of the Confederacy, they became very circumspect to avoid the provost marshal on the lookout for deserters, spies, and traitors. Nevertheless, Atlanta Unionists provided aid to wounded Federal prisoners of war, even helping some to escape, and abetted Union spies who traversed Atlanta. Suffering through the deprivations of the war, the siege of Atlanta, occupation by Sherman, and its burning when he left, Cyrena kept the diary that put Dyer on the trail of the secret Yankees. The story is compelling-there is always a looming sense of danger and suspense as the secret Yankees live in fear of discovery. A comparison of Atlanta Unionists with those of Arkansas reveals striking differences and similarities. The situation was the same for both Atlanta and Arkansas Unionists-a disaffected minority subject to a government at war against the Unionists' sympathies. Threatened and intimidated by Confederate provost marshals into unwilling support of the Confederate war effort through involuntary military service and taxation, they were cowed into cautious expression of their true beliefs only to trusted friends. During Georgia's and Arkansas's secession crises, both Unionist groups campaigned against secession, but they became quiet after secession, and when conscription breathed down their necks they avoided it by fleeing North. But that was the limit of the similarities. The differences lie in the origins and responses of the two groups. …" @default.
