- W1567327802 abstract "Nickel is an essential ultra-micronutrient for higher plants and some cyanobacteria. The best known function in higher plants is its role in the active center of the enzyme urease, but at least one by now well-known additional function is the deterrence of herbivores in Ni hyperaccumulator plants. In cyanobacteria, Ni has additional enzymatic functions, e.g., in the active centers of hydrogenases and superoxide dismutases. In this review we discuss important chemical and biochemical aspects of these physiological functions of nickel, including its transport to the target sites. Nickel can also be toxic to plants and cyanobacteria. Mechanisms of toxicity depend on the concentration of Ni as well as environmental conditions (e.g., irradiance) and the species of plant or cyanobacterium under investigation. We summarize some mechanisms of nickel-induced inhibitions that have been observed under environmentally relevant conditions. Further, the occurrence and relevance of nickel pollution in the environment is discussed. Plants developed various strategies to resist the toxicity of nickel, which differ strongly, depending on the type of plant. Plants growing in a low-nickel environment reveal other mechanisms of nickel homeostasis compared with plants growing on nickel-rich sites such as serpentine soil. In the latter case, nickel hyperaccumulators require completely different mechanisms compared with nickel excluders. All these cases are analyzed here. Finally, the use of nickel hyperaccumulator plants for decontamination of metal polluted soils (phytoremediation) and for commercial nickel extraction (phytomining) is discussed." @default.
