- W1567467659 abstract "It was my desire in writing the article that appeared in Levant XXI (Hoffmeier Ig8g) to open a dialogue between Egyptologists and SyroPalestinian archaeologists at a period where our disciplines converge, viz. 16th-15th centuries B.C. Neither a hidden agenda nor revisionist view of the history of the I6th15th centuries B.C. for the eastern Mediterranean was offered. By training I am an Egyptologist; however, the questions raised in Levant XXI (cf. note I) grew out of a graduate seminar on the Bronze Age in Syria-Palestine,. while at the same time reading the text of the Annals of Thutmose III in another course. While examining the various excavation reports of Megiddo, Gezer, Shechem, Hazor, and Lachish, it struck me that the Egyptian epigraphic material, so essential in establishing absolute dates and offering possible explanations on how the MBA concluded, had been used rather loosely at best, and erroneously in some cases. Since the Egyptian inscriptions in question are so important to Levantine archaeology, it seemed prudent to address my concerns to scholars working in that area. I believe that it was in this same spirit of academic inquiry that the editor of Levant invited Professor William Dever to respond to my article (Dever Iggo ) and in turn has allowed me the courtesy to answer Dever.1 All too often in Near Eastern studies, certain theories or interpretations of history are based on assumptions that have never been thoroughly scrutinized. Then, as sometimes happens, the assumptions of one generation become the generally accepted view of the next.2 For this reason, academics involved in the study of the ancient Near East must constantly re-evaluate the present state of their discipline in light of new evidence and new models; Since I have sought to raise honest questions based on Egyptian records of the first third of the 18th Dynasty about the nature of the end of MBA Palestine, and two scholars have already acknowledged the seriousness of the issues raised (Bienkowski Ig8g, n.7; Bietak in press, n. I 33), the tone of Dever's rejoinder is disappointing. Little is gained in the pursuit of knowledge when ad hominem arguments are presented. Regrettably, rather than confronting the evidence presented, Dever has sought to discredit me by labelling my approach" @default.
