- W156748561 abstract "This chapter discusses the corrosion resistance of glassy alloys. The advent of novel glassy alloy systems with unique structural, mechanical, magnetic, electronic, and other properties has stimulated the interest of corrosion scientists, because some glassy alloys are remarkably corrosion-resistant. Corrosion scientists are using certain glassy alloy compositions to gain fresh insight into the nature of passivity and its breakdown, and they are also exploring these alloys for practical applications such as protective coatings on base metal substrates. The glassy alloys are, in effect, a new tool that can be used to probe the influence of atomic structure and composition on the chemical interaction of alloys with their environment. The term glassy refers to metallic phases that have no long-range structural order. Their structure has been described as a stop-action photograph of the corresponding liquid. They are sometimes referred to as amorphous; however, the existence of some short-range atomic order, over a few atomic distances, has prompted the use of the term glassy to distinguish them from substances that are truly amorphous on an atomic scale." @default.
