- W1567491777 abstract "The periodontal disease is characterized by gingival infl ammation and alveolar bone destruction leading to the loss of teeth. There are two kinds of periodontitis, chronic and aggressive. The immuno-infl ammatory response in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is initiated by the production of a wide range of cytokines including IL-12, IL-18 IFN-γ and their receptors. In this review we will describe the role of the IL-12, IL-18, IFN-γ and their receptors as a group of molecules that work synergistically in the immunopathology of chronic-infl ammatory diseases such as periodontitis. We will also describe how the deregulation of these molecules could cause clinically signifi cant changes. Nowadays, a deregulation of IL-12, IL-18 and IFN-γ levels on periodontal disease has been described, and the presence of alterations in the expression of the IFN-γ receptor has been demonstrated. Our team has been studying the expression of IL-12 and IL-18 receptors in gingival tissue of patients with periodontal disease as well as healthy individuals’ tissues by immunohistochemistry technique to get to understand the role of these molecules on periodontitits. These molecules could be used as markers on immuno-pathogenesis of the illness in the future." @default.
