Given the large gap in unemployment and employment rates betweengroups of migrants, we look at several economic, human capital and culturalfactors in order to test whether migrant-specific characteristics can help to explainethnic group differences in labour market outcomes, The migrant-specific culturalvariables we investigate include host-country language proficiency, interethniccontacts, host-country media consumption, and religiosity. The results indicatethat although labour market transitions of migrants strongly depend on the labourmarket context, host-country orientation and religiosity also have some impact onthe labour market integration of individual migrants, especially on transitions intoemployment of male migrants and married migrant housewives. However; whilefor most of our cultural variables we find significant effects on the individual level,these factors do not help to clarify the differences among the different migrantgroups, which persist at a similar level even after controlling for labour market,general human capital, as well as cultural variables.Das vorliegende Paper untersucht die Effekte von Wohnlandorientierung undkultureller Differenz von Migranten aus der Turkei, dem ehemaligen Jugoslawiensowie Griechenland, Italien und Spanien auf ihre soziookonomische Integrationin Deutschland. Anhand von SOEP-Daten fur die Jahre 1988-2006 werdenArbeitslosigkeits- und Erwerbstatigkeitsdauern von Frauen und Mannern mitMigrationshintergrund sowie Ubergange von Hausarbeit in Erwerbstatigkeit vonMigrantinnen analysiert. Angesichts der deutlichen Differenzen in den Arbeitslosigkeits-und Erwerbsquoten unterschiedlicher Migrantengruppen werden okonomischeKontextbedingungen, Humankapitalvariablen und kulturelle Faktorenherangezogen, um zu prufen, ob migrantenspezifische Charakteristika wieWohnlandsprachkompetenz, interethnische Kontakte, Medienpraferenzen undReligiositat zur Erklarung von ethnischen Gruppenunterschieden im Arbeitsmarkterfolgbeitragen konnen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Arbeitsmarktubergangevon Migranten in erster Linie von okonomischen Kontextfaktoren bestimmtwerden. Dennoch wird die Arbeitsmarktintegration von Migranten auf der individuellenEbene auch von Wohnlandorientierung und Religiositat beeinflusst.Dieser Befund gilt insbesondere fur Ubergange von mannlichen Migranten undHausfrauen mit Migrationshintergrund in Erwerbstatigkeit.
