- W1567677748 abstract "Static (dip coating) and dynamic (electrochemically assisted) adsorption techniques were used to prepare chemically modified electrodes from aqueous solutions of the viologen condensation polymer poly-(4,4'-dipyridy)-p-xylene) dichloride, or (PXV)Cl. Cyclic voltammetric scans of the adsorbed films in aqueous solution show substantial variation in peak potential and waveshape with electrode material (carbon, gold, tin oxide) and with adsorption conditions (static vs. dynamic coating, concentration of polymer, and added salt). The adsorbed layer is described in terms of two distinct surface viologen phases, one that involves a strong viologen-surface interaction (broad waves, low coverage) and another that involves strong viologen-viologen interactions (narrow waves, higher coverage). The two phases are distinguished by their sensitivities to electrode material and to variations in supporting electrolyte anion, as well as by their redox potentials and voltammetric waveshapes. Spectroelectrochemical experiments with films adsorbed on tin oxide electrodes confirm that all the immobilized viologen is electrochemically accessible. The narrow waves characteristic of the dynamically coated phase (on carbon in chloride solution) are very sensitive to the electrolyte anion and could not be reproduced from spin-coated films of (PXV)PF6 that were subsequently transferred to chloride solution." @default.
