- W1567872484 abstract "The routine requirement for a viscous couplant to be applied to the face of ultrasonic transducers to accommodate the surface roughness when testing concrete is both inconvenient and time consuming. An alternative which is being considered by the authors is to couple the transducer to the surface via a compliant interface which may either be used dry or wetted just with water. Encouraging results have been obtained by using a membrane coupled device. This consists of a rubber diaphragm which encapsulates a pressurized liquid volume. The degree of coupling of the membrane to a rough surface depends on the properties of the diaphragm and the liquid pressure as well as the roughness characteristics of the surface. A model has been derived to predict the strength of the transmission of the ultrasound into the concrete in order to be able to select design parameters for best transmission. Results of the application of the model, together with measured transmission coefficients, are presented. It is found that it is hard to achieve good coupling with a dry membrane, although in certain circumstances the performance may be adequate. However, wetting the membrane with a thin film of water enables good results to be obtained on a range of surfaces. The quantity of water that is required is much smaller than that of the viscous couplant that is used with current devices; it is also much simpler to apply and does not need to be cleaned off the surface after testing. In practice, the wetting can be achieved, for example, by using a textured rubber diaphragm." @default.
