Instrumented impact testing is widely used for determining dynamic fracture toughness characteristic of polymers. Above 1 m/s impact velocity the traditional force-based analyses cannot be applied. In this case the measurement of time-to-fracture value is usually necessary for dynamic analyses. The electric emission technique has the potential ability to detect the initiation of brittle fracture of polymers. In the present work the applicability and the accuracy of this technique have been investigated. The dynamic fracture toughness of different polymeric materials has been determined using different measurement techniques and data reduction methods.
