- W1568405147 abstract "The Indicted South: Public Criticism, Southern Inferiority, and the Politics of Whiteness. By Angie Maxwell. (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2014. Pp. x, 311. Acknowledgments, notes, bibliography, index. $34.95.)What became of the arguments for a cohesive, stable, and distinctive South? In the waning of the twentieth century, scholars traced the experiences of diverse southerners through attention to race and gender while a broader and more discursive understanding appeared in the early twenty-first century with the southern studies. Emerging in the writings of Houston Baker, this rising new new South brimmed with a rich array of cultures that not only included multiple categories of sexual orientation and ethnic communities but the continued redefinition of identities through popular forms of media and modes of communication. Angie Maxwell's The Indicted South reflects the influence of latter-day cultural studies while also cutting against the grain of their interpretative frameworks. In the works of Baker, Dana Nelson, Tara McPherson, Jon Smith, John Howard, Gary Richards, and many others, the South was no longer exceptional and far from orthodox. Transgressive cultural expressions crisscrossed traditional boundaries of class and race in Dixie locales immersed in a global marketplace of goods and ideas. Maxwell in her fine study also credits outside forces as dominant in shaping the construction of a white southern culture, though one characterized by the familiar defiance and resentment toward modern northern societies. One strain of the new southern studies detected modernities setting the region apart from mass culture and hyper-capitalism reigning elsewhere. Brock Thompson in his The Un-Natural State: Arkansas and the Queer South (2010) submitted the concept as a means to understand Arkansas through the lens of post-colonialism, emphasizing, as have other scholars, that the southern alternative to northern urban culture was fluid, hybrid, and permissive in offering spaces for diversities of behavior. Maxwell, on the other hand, depicts a hardening of southern white ideology and growing insularity in the face of northern criticism. The amplification of this criticism through national media and its concentration at key moments heightened the sense of mistreatment and persecution by those on the receiving endMaxwell pinpoints as stations of the southern cross the 1925 Scopes Trial in Tennessee, the publication in 1930 of I'll Take My Stand by the Nashville Agrarians, and the wielding in 1955 of the interposition doctrine as the sword in Virginia's resistance to the Brown v. Board of Education decision. She revives the concept of collective psychology to explain that white southerners' embedded sense of inferiority provoked a recoil from derision, sometimes with savage results.Southern fundamentalists concluded upon the sudden death of William Jennings Bryan that humiliation differed little from martyrdom. Bryan's war against evolution had transformed him into an honorary southerner, opening him up to demeaning editorial accounts of his clash with Clarence Darrow at Dayton, Tennessee. …" @default.
