- W1569092105 abstract "This article examines the relationship between identity perceptions and ‘othering’ among Dutch combat soldiers and their impact on their behavior during operations, focusing on nationalism and illegitimate violence. Research on military intervention often equates discourses on institutional levels, such as the state level, with servicemen’s perceptions. This article analyzes the ideas and experiences of combat soldiers by drawing on in-depth interviews, which have been gathered through ethnographic research. In doing so, it provides original empirical material which sheds new light on the interconnectedness of ‘us’ and ‘them’. More specifically, it demonstrates the discontents of ‘serving the country’ in times when national identity is predominantly experienced as cultural superiority. However, the findings also expose manifestations of multiple, context-dependent identities. This challenges dominant notions of the ‘military mind’ and shows the necessity of multi-leveled and multi-sited research on the relations between identity and violence." @default.
