- W1569097650 abstract "The amount of uridine hydrate and pyrimidine dimers formed upon UV irradiation of polynucleotides was compared with the absorbancy decrease observed upon irradiation. In the case of TMV-RNA, irradiation was performed in the hyperchromed and hypochromed state, i.e., in water and 10−3M Mg2+, and the analytical and absorbancy data were compared with the losses of infectivity. From these data it was concluded that the loss of absorbancy of TMV-RNA in water, as well as that of poly U, corresponded to the amount of UV products formed. When the reaction with TMV-RNA was performed in presence of Mg2+, the reaction was slower and the number of modified bases greater than calculated from the absorbancy loss. One inactivating event occurred when 3–10 photochemical events had taken place. The effect of the reaction became proportionately less lethal as the reaction proceeded. The finding that the proportion of dimers to hydrates did not affect the lethality suggests that either type of photoproduct may represent an inactivating event." @default.
