- W1569112017 abstract "Medicago truncatula was chosen as a model legume for the genetic analysis of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in the 1990s and is also now widely used for research on various aspects of plant development, symbiotic, and pathogen interactions with microbes and secondary metabolism. Establishment of a reference genome sequence for this species was crucial for the development of functional genomic approaches: it was started using BAC by BAC sequencing and completed by whole genome sequencing, resulting in an assembly anchoring more than 95% of genes to chromosomes. This resource is widely used for genome-wide studies such as transcriptomics, including small RNA analysis, proteomics, reverse genetics, and association mapping. In addition, together with other legume genome sequences, it provided important information on Medicago and legume genome structure and evolution, including evidence for a whole genome duplication that occurred early in legume evolution. M. truncatula is phylogenetically close to important legume crops (alfalfa, pea, lentil, faba bean), its genome sequence is thus a very useful resource for translational genomics." @default.
