- W1569128463 abstract "Seismological data recording the oscillations of seismic waves at distinct locations on the Earth's surface can be used to infer variations in elastic properties and density within the Earth. Creating images or models of these variations is commonly called “seismic tomography.” This chapter describes the relationships between the character of body or surface wave propagation or of normal mode oscillations, and variations in subsurface Earth structure (the Earth model). It explores how and under what conditions these relationships can be linearized. This allows linearized inverse theory to be used to estimate the structure from data, recording the oscillations of such waves. Constructing model estimates require excellent data quality and stringent conditions to be fulfilled on the spatial distribution of the data. These conditions can also be used to design ideal seismological surveys. Tomographic models using body-wave and surface-wave data attain comparable resolution within some volumes of the Earth, but their sensitivity to aspects of Earth structure are significantly different." @default.
