- W1569129801 abstract "Fluorescence spectra demonstrate at least two fluorophores in the XAD-4 acids that were not apparent in the humic (HAs) or fulvic acids (FAs), and also the presence of fluorescent units in the FAs that were not apparent in the HAs. The FT-IR spectra were similar, as were the proton ( 1 H) NMR spectra of the humic substances (HS) isolated from the B h horizons of a forested site, and of a site where the forest was cleared 400 years ago. The 1 H NMR data, however, showed a large increase in aliphatic functionalities in the HS from the B h horizon compared with those from the A h horizon, and there was considerable evidence for exchangeable protons in the HS fractions from the A h horizon. The XAD-4 acids, and to a lesser extent the FAs, contained a high diversity of exchangable protons. The HAs isolated at the higher pH values exhibited resonances in the exchangeable proton region that were relatively well resolved, and that might be interpreted as evidence for protons associated with ether-, ester-, and lactone-type functionalities in the less well humified fractions that are extractable only when the aqueous media are alkaline. The data would suggest greater homogeneity in the fractions within the A h horizon, and could indicate that considerable changes take place in the compositions of the HS before they are transported in the podzolization process, and/or that significant changes take place in the compositions of the HS during their residence in the B h horizon." @default.
