Heavy fuel oil is primarily composed of high molecular weight hydrocarbons which are not volatile enough to vaporise, but are pyrolized to form volatile gases and polymers through thermal cracking and polymerisation respectively. The present work studied the effects of heating rates and chemical kinetics on a droplet's tendency to form pollutants during combustion. Baert's pyrolysis model for thermal cracking and polymerisation was applied to a single droplet. The results obtained from this modelling show that polymer formation within a droplet is dependent on heating rate and composition, and that a small droplet produces more polymer than a big droplet at the same ambient condition, which is contradictory to expectations. Consequently, Baert's pyrolysis model cannot be applied to spray combustion modelling because in an engine, the droplets are small, and heating rates are high due to combustion. Furthermore, Baert's pyrolysis model predicts that polymerisation begins before thermal cracking, which is contradictory to experimental evidence. Therefore, several pyrolysis models were studied and a modified model is proposed. The results of the modified pyrolysis model do not show any significant dependency of polymer formation on droplet heating rate, and show thermal cracking beginning earlier than polymerisation.
