- W1569165429 abstract "The observational findings are briefly reviewed that variously led to the conjecture that nonradial pulsation could influence the mass-loss processes from early-type stars. Starting from this historical background, a systematic attempt is made to characterize the pulsational properties of the known types of pulsating OB-stars in connection with their mass-loss properties. Two groups of stars on the fringe of the domain in the HRD, where the strong radiative forces dominate over everything else, emerge as exhibiting the highest potential for conclusive observational tests: (i) At the low-temperature limit, these are the B/A supergiants. The available observational facts indicate that positive evidence is weak at best. By contrast, there are numerous cases of rotational modulation of the wind. Contrary to this initial expectation, the pulsation connection is rescued by the textbook example of stellar winds, ς Pup. It is probable that at least the azimuthal velocity and density structure of the wind is co-shaped by low-order nonradial pulsation. (ii) At the low-luminosity limit, an intriguing picture develops in which the line-emission outbursts of some Be stars arise from the (periodic) interaction between several very-long-period low-degree g-modes.KeywordsEmission LineSpectral TypeStellar WindWolf Rayet StarWind VariabilityThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
