• W1569174349 abstract "The advent of building information modeling in thestructural engineering profession has brought forth new challengesto the traditional methods of design and analysis. The need forfaster, more robust analyses to mitigate expenses and increasestructural insight is a demand that stems from the implementationof BIM modeling. Current software interoperability now allowsengineers limited opportunity to engage directly and immediatelywith the design process. The development of tools which can bringtogether the architectural and structural engineering professionsare of paramount importance in the next phase of professionaldesign. In response to this professional demand, a softwareframework for Rhino3D modeling software was created which exploresthe various methods of searching a design space and findingsolutions. Both parametric design generation and geneticoptimizations were employed, allowing architects and engineers toexplore the design space of a structure using metrics important toeach field. A case study is performed using the developed softwareframework to quantify results and validate the effectiveness ofsuch a new design tool in the current engineering profession. Theoutcome is an improved design experience that is feasible in timeand scope, allowing architects and engineers an opportunity totruly explore the design space.
