- W156918887 abstract "The excitation functions of (p,pn) reactions in F, Na, Mn, Y, Cs, and Au at 20 and 150 Mev were studied. The cross sections were measured in absolute values by classical gamma spectrometry, and the results, in agreement with other measurements, are much superior to theoretical predictions based on the models actually used. A theoretical interpretation was attempted by the following processes: Coulomb excitation followed by neutron evaporation, pickup,'' and the Serber two-stage model. The first two mechanisms give a very slight contribution, especially above 50 Mev. Only the Serber model is in qualitative agreement with experimental results. The direct interaction calculations made at Los Alamos were used, and the evaporation phase was calculated with an IBM-650 computer. The introduction of pairing'' energies permits pure evaporation to be taken into account in a satisfactory fashion. The direct interaction seems underestimated in the Los Alamos calculations, and an evaluation of the effects of an improved diffuse nuclear surface sharply improves experimenttheory accord. Complete calculations made with this hypothesis and a consideration of possible nuclear substructures makes this model much more realistic. A systematic study of the cross sections of (p,pn) reactions at 100 and 400 Mev has shown that at thesemore » energies the most important process seems to be a direct surface interaction produced in foils with thickness about 1.5 times the mean free path of protons in the nuclear matter.
