- W15691998 abstract "The counselor in this scene used metaphorical language to enrich a description of her professional role. Though worded as similes, that is, comparisons using like or as, these statements define the counselor's approach indirectly using memorable sensory-based statements. One strategy the counselor used in constructing these metaphors was to interweave all three sensory modes: the auditory description of the ear, the visual description of the puppy, and the kinesthetic description of the blanket. The child received an answer to her question that provided several memorable symbols. Interweaving sensory symbols to describe the counselor's role is only one of several ways counselors can use metaphors to increase their effectiveness in their work with children. This article will provide a brief history of the use of metaphor. Then eight strategies for using metaphors with children will be described. After that, a systematic approach for constructing interwoven metaphors for children and a description of some limitations to the use of metaphors in counseling will follow." @default.
