• W15692236 abstract "One of the most urgent challenges in an increasingly industrialized world is the development of more economical and ecological products. The reduction of environmentally harmful pollutants and the increase of fuel efficiency while maintaining structural safety and durability is one of the most demanding topics. In this context, the use of magnesium alloys bear the promise to make a significantly contribution. The aim of this work is to investigate the microstructural, thermal and mechanical development of high speed friction stir processed magnesium AZ31. The process parameters were developed with underlying preset to develop defect free joints sporting a fine grained microstructure. The microstructure and local mechanical properties of the stir zone (SZ) have been investigated. The thermal evolution during processing has been predicted using finite element methods. These predictions were calibrated and backed up by thermo couple measurements. The local mechanical properties have been investigated by micro flat tensile tests. This study shows that while maintaining constant weld quality, the energy input continuously decreased with increasing feed rate. Depending on the processing condition the temperature beneath the tool ranged from 470 °C to 300 °C. Micro tensile test display a ductility increase of up to 85% compared to the base material." @default.
