- W1569266613 abstract "TRANSED has evolved from a venue for researchers searching for colleagues who recognized the need to focus on issues of access and mobility for seniors and people with disability. From the pioneering research presented at the first meeting in 1978 in Cambridge, England to the most recent conference held in Montreal, Canada in 2007, there has been a major shift from demand responsive services, to access to essential and non essential services. Changes have also included access through improved design of all transportation vehicles, infrastructure supporting transportation modes such as bus stations, airports, ports, rail road stations etc. Hand in hand with design issues, legislations have been passed from the ADA in the US in 1990 to many other countries following suite such as the PWD Act of 1995 in India etc. A final impact of TRANSED over the last three decades have been the inclusion of concerns among researchers, NGOs and organizations such as the UN and the World Bank to promote accessibility for the developing countries all over the world to the point that major countries with large development agendas have recognized the role of accessibility and mobility to not just the target population of seniors and the disabled, but also for everyone. This expansionist view of the benefits of accessibility and mobility beyond the immediate cost is largely due to a greater awareness and willingness for multi disciplinary research, reflected by the papers presented at TRANSEDs over the three decades. In part it is also due to the convergence of many experts in different disciplines such as architecture, engineering, planning geriatrics, public administration, social sciences and medicine, that only an integrated approach can support providing this growing awareness and need for access and mobility to meet an expanding demand. This expansion of demand for accessible transportation has perhaps been assisted by a more open communication system through the internet, television, newspapers, exposure to visitors and travel to see how people’s lives can be improved with accessibility. Perhaps the current emphasis on accessible tourism has made the biggest impact in recent history even in countries that previously had a silent disabled and senior population segment. This paper documents these major changes over the last 30 years by geography to focus on the impact of TRANSED from the beginning to its transformative role in a globally connected society where public expectations matches their direct or indirect (through television/ news media, & internet) experience." @default.
