- W1569268424 abstract "In 1976 when the Southeastern Library Association/Reference and Adult Services Division's Program Planning Committee began preparation for the SELA/SWLA joint preconference workshop, New Look in Adult Services, members were concerned that a program meaningful both academic and public librarians be de signed. As a committee member represent ing the academic community, was asked survey the college and university librar ies in the ten-state SELA area deter mine what functions academic reference librarians held in common with public li brary adult services librarians in order pinpoint shared interests and needs. The survey, conducted in the latter months of 1977, was based on those duties tra ditionally associated with public library adult services as defined by the Encyclo pedia of Library and Information Sci ence.1 The academic libraries were chosen according their designation as such by the American Library Directory.2 From 326 surveys mailed out, 252 replies were received for a 77 percent rate of response. While most questions dealt with various traditional services offered by the refer ence departments, some concerned a sub ject one hears little about?academic li brary program planning. It was concerning this topic, Innovations in Program Plan ning in Academic Libraries, that was asked speak at the New Orleans Pre conference Workshop. The survey revealed that 25 percent of the responding academic libraries in the ten-state area of SELA seem be ac tively engaged in program planning. Ad mittedly, many factors might account for this low percentage. The librarian who filled out the questionnaire might not have understood the question. Uninformed or hurried participants might have crippled the response. Or perhaps, as the survey suggests, few programs are sponsored. If the latter is indeed true, we might ponder the case for encouraging academic library program planning. There are many reasons why program ming would benefit academic libraries. Public libraries have long recognized that good programs and activities serve as bait lure patrons.3 Academic libraries have a designated clientele, which are typically fairly heavy library users?many times be cause class needs dictate it or they are re quired be. For many, going the li brary under duress takes on all the attrac tion of going under the dentist's drill. But if students begin recognize the library as an educational/recreational stimulus in tune their lives?more of an I want to than an I have to place?maybe they'll stop holding their noses every time they swallow the medicine. Another reason academia might look programs is simply this: good programs beget better programs and foster solid community relations.4 Goodwill is created among possible future collaborators, and loans of exhibits are encouraged as the public sees favorable response. Thirdly, believe programs fall under the generic book catch-all, as they in deed are extensions of material on the shelves.5 One would use them as naturally and unhesitatingly as any other resource enlighten, critique, and arouse discus" @default.
