- W1569294263 abstract "The first form of videoconference appeared over seventy years ago, yet it was not until the past few years that it became a practical reality. Today, we find it everywhere. And while we understand that it can reduce costs and make people more efficient, we have very little understanding of its second order effects. Among them the question as to how videoconferencing affects persuasion. This research looks at the effect of videoconferencing on persuasion. It does it within the theoretical framework of the Elaboration Likelihood Model and the Heuristic Systematic Model. It is based on a field study of real life professional lectures given simultaneously to a local face-to-face and a remote videoconference audience. The effect of videoconferencing on persuasion is explained by the increased mental workload and decreased levels of interaction between the lecturer and the audience. In turn, both of these affect the ability and motivation of the audience to engage in systematic elaboration of the message. The findings corroborate the effects of argument quality (a central cue) and source likeability (a peripheral cue) on persuasion as well as the effect of videoconference on cognitive workload. They also bring new knowledge into light by showing the effects of videoconference on systematic and heuristic processing. Finally, they spark new possibilities by showing how hierarchy does not affect persuasion in expert settings while source likeability seems to be very relevant and by highlighting that perceived active participation seems to affect both routes to persuasion. While the effect of written text, audiotapes, phone, and face-to-face communication media on persuasion has been extensively studied under these and other theoretical frameworks, this, as far we know, is the first time that videoconferencing is studied in the context of persuasive communications. Furthermore, we believe that this is also the first time that the level of interactive participation is studied as a factor that affects persuasion. Finally, most previous research has been experimental, while this one went into the field. The results of this research provide theoretical as well as practical contributions to both, the field of MIS and the reference discipline of social psychology." @default.
