- W1569320253 abstract "Connective tissue fibroblasts are considered fundamental in the process of wound healing, but their origin remains controversial. For decades the prevailing view was that local resident mesenchymal cells migrated, proliferated and synthesized extracellular matrix in response to injury. The recent boom in stem cell research has provided a vast amount of evidence suggesting that the origin of fibroblasts might be, partly at least, in the bone marrow. Circulating fibrocytes are cells from hematopoietic origin displaying a unique cell surface phenotype characterized by the expression of markers such as CD11b+/CD13+/CD34+/CD45+/MHC class II+/ CD86+/Col I+. They were first described in 1994; it is known that they participate in inflammatory processes, fibrosis and cancer among other pathologies. This paper presents a comprehensive view of these cells including their discovery, origin and relevance for clinical and basic research.
