- W1569320646 abstract "The market pull of more fuel efficient vehicles is causing manufacturing companies to search for weight-saving substitutes for steel from aluminum and magnesium alloys. The advantage of magnesium is that it is less dense than aluminum with a specific gravity of 1,7 compared to 2,7 for aluminum. However, the advantage of aluminum is that it is usually more resistant to corrosion because it develops a protective layer of aluminum oxide whereas the corrosion products of magnesium are not protective. A compromise approach is to ad aluminum to magnesium such as alloy AZ91D. This alloy has sufficient strength at ambient temperature and corrosion resistance to be employed for several components of cars. However, the use of aluminum-magnesium alloys is restricted to conditions less than about 125 °C because of their tendency to creep, which precludes their use for applications such as engine blocks. Therefore there is a search for a combination of alloying elements that will enable these alloys to have sufficient creep resistance in the 150-200 °C range and to have equivalent or better corrosion resistance than AZ91D. One approach is to increase the zinc content and decrease the aluminum content relative to AZ91D. A recent report claimed that several zinc-magnesium alloys had better mechanical properties, such as yield strength and creep resistance, than AZ91D [1].
