- W1569503661 abstract "There is a widely held belief among commentators and social researchers that young people in Australia and other Western countries increasingly reject the responsibilities and commitments that come with ‘adulthood’. This perspective is informed by a developmental framework that overlooks the complex lives of young Australians and the changing structural and social conditions that contribute to the shaping of their lives. Recognising the diversity of young people and the complexity of their lives is key to enhancing an understanding of young people who experience disadvantage. In this article, we draw on data from surveys and interviews with 21 year olds in the Life Chances Study - a longitudinal study that began in inner-city Melbourne in 1990. We found that some young people, particularly young women from low-income families, spoke of 21 as an age of increasing caring responsibilities in their families, and that it was this experience that informed their views of ‘adulthood’. Those from more affluent families did not speak of a role as carer in their perspectives of ‘adulthood’. Such results demonstrate that interaction of structures of inequality, including economic and gender structures, provide a more thorough explanation of young people’s understandings and experiences of ‘adulthood’ than individually focused and de-contextualised approaches." @default.
