- W1569573362 abstract "This chapter discusses the methods available to study skeletal muscle protein breakdown, and the role of three major proteolytic pathways so far well characterized in this tissue—for example, the lysosomal, Ca2+-activated and ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent processes. A particular emphasis is placed on the regulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway that is presumably involved in the breakdown of contractile components. Proteins in skeletal muscle, as in other mammalian tissues, undergo a continuous process of synthesis and degradation. Rates of protein turnover regulate the levels of specific proteins, as well as the overall muscle-protein mass during growth and atrophy. Overwhelming evidence that the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway substantially participates in the breakdown of muscle proteins has been recently provided. However, these studies raise many questions. The precise identification of proteins that are ubiquitylated in skeletal muscle is of importance. Equally important is the identification of signals in proteins that are involved in the selection of proteins for ubiquitin ligation and degradation." @default.
