YOUTH AND ADULTS EDUCATION UNDER THE PERSPECTIVE OF TEACHERS FROM CAPE VERDE, AFRICA Abstract: This paper presents a research developed with Cape Verdean teachers who work in the Youth and Adults Education (EJA). It aimed to analyze the teachers’ knowledge and practices, and identify the students’ motivations and learning difficulties based on the teachers’ beliefs. The research took place on São Vicente island, which is located in Cape Verde, Africa, in February 2014. A public school where the Culture Circus happens, an activity aimed to EJA students, was investigated. Among the participants were eleven teachers, including male and female genders, who work with different subjects. Data collection was conducted through interviews which were recorded in audio and transcribed for further content analysis. The methodology used to develop the research was based on readings about the culture of that country, school development and public policies designed for general and specific EJA education. The study shows that the education in Cape Verde has improved significantly, mainly after the country's independence in 1975. It was also observed that the Ministry of Education has promoted education practices, and that some of the participants involved in such practices are already taking post-graduation degrees in order to make both the teaching and learning processes more meaningful. Finally, the teachers’ attempts to motivate the students to finish their studies are noticeable in the sense that all the participants interviewed mentioned their love for EJA and responsibility for their teaching practice.
