- W1569605820 abstract "The effects of emissions controls on fuel economy were determined in an American Petroleum Institute study by analyzing fleet fuel consumption data for 20,728 passenger cars (1967-77 models). Data on car weight, engine displacement, compression ratio, carburetion, transmission type, axle ratio, air conditioning, and miles driven per month were obtained and subjected to linear regression analyses. Design changes during this period affected fuel economy significantly; fuel economy decreased steadily from the 1967 through 1973 model years and then increased steadily through 1976. The increase in fuel consumed from 1967 to 1973 due to emission controls was 13Vertical Bar3<. Car weight, engine displacement, compression ratio, and axle ratio generally had significant effects on fuel economy, car weight having the major effect over the period. For any given make-model, cars with six-cylinder engines had appreciably better fuel economy than those with V-8's." @default.
