- W1569647651 abstract "The elderly population is the most rapidly expanding sector of the US population, with an estimated 13 million citizens over the age of 75, including 1.6 million nonagenarians and 72,000 centenarians; these figures are expected to quadruple over the next half century (). Based on population studies, life expectancy at the age of 80 years is 8.5 years, and at the age of 85 and over, it is 6.3 years (). These striking demographics are, in large part, believed to be the result of improvements in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in young and middle-aged adults, leading to improved survival and the delayed onset of disease until later years. Consequently, there has been a marked increase in the incidence and prevalence of cardiac disease in older adults (,), making CVD the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Despite advances in medical therapies for CVDs, however, the morbidity and mortality of cardiac disease in older individuals remain high (, , , ). Hence, cardiac surgery, a well-established means of increasing survival and improving the quality of life in many patients under the age of 70 years, is becoming increasingly common in septuagenarians, octogenarians, and even nonagenarians ()." @default.
