- W1569676035 abstract "Electronic spectra arise from transitions between electronic states and since such transitions require relatively large quantities of energy (200–500 mu or about 100–70 kcal/mol) they are accompanied by simultaneous changes in vibrational and rotational states giving rise to generally broad bands in the spectra. The use of lasers to provide excitation energy has added a new dimension to electronic spectroscopy. Electrons occupy orbitals, and thus, electronic transitions are conveniently described using atomic and molecular orbital terminology such as d to d, n to π*, π to π* transitions. Molecules in their excited states may undergo a variety of transformations leading to a whole new science; such chemistry is the domain of photochemistry. Of course, molecules in their excited state must return to their ground state and this process is frequently accompanied by radiation emissions giving rise to fluorescence and phosphorescence phenomena. If chemists are to better understand the consequences of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with molecules, some understanding of the physics of wave behavior and radiation is required and this chapter attempts to provides this as well in the 182 terms and concepts presented herewith." @default.
